Staffing Change

K-1 and K-3 parents, please be informed that a staffing change will occur after the Winter Break in your child's classroom. To better meet the needs of some of our students, Mrs. Melanie O'Neill (DECE currently in K-1) and Mrs. Casey Jones (DECE currently in K-3) will be switching classrooms. The Kindergarten staff plan on sharing this news with the students later this week. Both Mrs. O'Neill and Mrs. Jones are looking forward to the opportunity to work with new students, but are glad that they will still see their current students outside during outdoor play time.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact Mr. Scott at the office.

Just a Reminder...

We are looking forward to our Kinder Christmas Movie and Pizza Night which will be held this Wednesday evening (December 16th) in our school gymnasium. The fun begins at 5:30 PM. Be sure to wear your favorite pajamas. Parents are asked to bring beverages for your family and don't forget to pack a blanket and some comfy pillows for relaxing. We hope that you will make every effort to attend.
See you there!

Can You Help Us?

We are currently in need of a fine quality baby gate which can be used at the internal door to our classroom. The gate must be tall enough to discourage children from crawling over (or under) it. As well, the gate needs to be easy to set in place and remove quickly. We would prefer a plastic gate with a spring loaded handle for quick set-up and removal. If you have this type of gate and you would consider donating it to our classroom, please contact Mr. Pickett or Mrs. O'Neill. Thank you.
CHRISTMAS CAROL SING
Featuring Brad Boland

You are invited to come out and join us as we sing some of our favourite Christmas carols and holiday songs. Brad Boland will be leading us in song with his guitar. The Carol Sing will take place on Friday December 18th, beginning at 9:30 a.m. in our gymnasium. We hope to see you there!!
Pasta Day Reminder

Pasta Day will be held on Tuesday, December 15th in our K-1 classroom. This DOES NOT align with the rest of the school. Please make sure that you have your orders in by Monday, December 14th. Thanks.

Arrive in your coziest pyjamas with blankets and pillows prepared to enjoy a Classic Children’s Christmas movie. Pizza may be preordered in advance. An order form should have gone home with your child in Friday night's Zippy bag. Slices are at a cost of $1.00 each. Flavour choices include cheese or pepperoni and cheese. Families are encouraged to bring their own beverages from home for all family members who will be in attendance. Free popcorn will be provided for anyone wanting it. As well, the Kindergarten classes will present a short seasonal selection of songs.

To ensure the safety of all children, we ask that there be a parent in attendance with each student.

We hope that you and your family will make plans to attend.

Senior Kindergarten Parent/Teacher Conference

If you are the parent of a Senior Kindergarten student in the District School Board of Niagara, you have no doubt heard that your child will not be receiving a Progress Report in mid-December. In lieu of a Progress Report, Mr. Pickett and Mrs. O'Neill would like to offer you the opportunity to come in for a 10 minute Parent/Teacher Conference to discuss your child's progress thus far this year. Conferences will be conducted beginning Monday, November 30th-Thursday, December 10th at these times...

Monday-Thursday
8:15-8:25 AM
8:25-8:35 AM
3:30-3:40 PM
3:40-3:50 PM

Please enclose a short note in your child's ZIPPY BAG listing 3 choices of dates and times which would work best with your schedule. Requests will be taken on a First Come/First Serve basis. A confirmation of your conference appointment will be sent back to you in your child's Zippy Bag.

We are excited about and anxiously look forward to seeing you so that we might discuss your child's many accomplishments over the past three months.

Mr. Pickett
Mrs. O'Neill

PASTA LUNCH BEGINS  WEDNESDAY

Beginning this week, our classroom will be running a monthly PASTA LUNCH fundraising event to earn money for learning materials in our classroom. Pasta Lunch order forms are coming home this afternoon in your child's Zippy Bag. Students will be given the option to order either pasta with tomato sauce and meatballs or pasta with butter. A roll and carrot sticks with ranch dressing will accompany each meal. The lunch comes at a cost of $3.00 per child. Please complete the form and send it back to school tomorrow (Tuesday, November 24th) with $3.00 cash attached to the order form. If you wish to send additional items in your child's lunchbox to supplement his/her pasta meal, please feel free. Pasta Lunch will be served at our regularly scheduled lunch time (12:15-12:45 PM).

This fundraising event will occur on the last Wednesday of each month throughout the remainder of the school year. We hope that your child will choose to join us as the response in past years has been overwhelmingly positive.

Scholastic Book Orders

Last week, your child brought home several Scholastic Book order forms. Each month, new forms will be sent home to you in your child's Zippy Bag. Take time to look through the forms with your child and discuss the books featured there. Scholastic Book Club provides a wide range of fictional and non-fictional reading material from Pre-K up to High School aged children. The books are of exceptional quality and are often priced far below what you would expect to pay in a retail book store.

This month, our book order forms are due back to school on Tuesday, November 17th. I will be placing the order with Scholastic the next morning (November 18th). If you wish to order any children's books, please send the form back to school with all of the information filled out accurately. If possible, enclose a personal cheque for the amount owed and made out to SCHOLASTIC BOOK CLUBS. If you do not use cheques, then send cash. After the order has been shipped to me, I will sort the books and send them home in your child's backpack. If you wish for the order to be a surprise (Birthday/Christmas gift, etc...) then indicate that on the order and I will notify you personally so you can drop in and pick up the books without your child knowing.

Thanks for considering purchasing excellent children's literature for your son/daughter. Nurturing a love of reading in your child is one of the best things you can do to ensure literacy development and success.

Happy Reading!

Picture Retake Day Today

If you are wanting to have your child's school picture retaken, photographers will be at the school this morning (Thursday, November 5th) to ensure that this will occur. Please include a brief note in your child's Zippy Bag informing us of your desire to have retake pictures taken. Thanks.

Revised November Calendar Online

Following the contract negotiation settlement earlier this week, there have been a number of revisions made to our classroom calendar for the month of November (YAY!!!). You will find the revised calendar to the right of this screen under the 'Downloads' link. From there you can see the revisions and additions which have been added. Feel free to print yourself a new calendar or simply pencil in the changes onto the paper copy sent home this past Monday afternoon in your child's Zippy Bag.

As always, check our blog often for up to the minute information concerning important upcoming events.

Tuesday 3 November 2015

PIZZA DAYS ARE COMING!!!

Beginning this Friday, November 6th, pizza will be sold for $1.00 per slice for lunch. There is no need to pre-order earlier in the week. Simply send money in to school on Friday morning with your child in his/her Zippy Bag with a quick note indicating whether s/he would like pizza with pepperoni and cheese or only cheese. Feel free to send some supplementary snacks and treats to fill out his/her lunch, as well as a light, nutritious snack for the morning as usual. Milk will be served if you've ordered and pre-paid for your child.
WELCOME BACK!!!

It is with great pleasure that I am able to announce the reinstatement of our classroom blog. I want to thank you for your understanding and patience while provincial contract negotiations have taken place. Over the next several days I hope to post a number of items which will bring you up to date on many of our 'classroom happenings,' as well as some additional important dates which you will want to add to your November calendar.

Again, thank you for your patience. It is good to be back!

More First Week Fun!

Friday, September 18th
is EARLY RELEASE DAY!

On Friday of this week, September 18th, all students will be dismissed from school at 12:05 in the afternoon. Teachers will be involved in professional activities throughout the afternoon. ALL students must be picked up at 12:05 PM unless prearrangements have been made with the YMCA Daycare. Dismissal will occur at the south-east front door of the school.
ZIPPY BAGS GO HOME ON MONDAY,  SEPTEMBER 14th

Be on the lookout for your child's ZIPPY BAG in his/her backpack Monday afternoon when s/he comes home from school. This bag will enable us to stay connected with each family throughout the year. Check the bag each evening and place it back into the backpack. We will check the ZIPPY BAG each morning when your child arrives at school. There will be many days when the bag arrives home empty. That's OK. Simple leave it in the backpack and send it back to school the next morning. Thanks for helping us to reinforce this very important routine with your child.

Highlights From Our First Day

Meeting and making new friends, renewing old friendships, creating with play dough, discovering wonders found in nature, singing, dancing, sharing stories, laughing and learning were all a part of our first day together. I can't wait to see what tomorrow holds!

Welcome to FDELKP!

It is with great pleasure and excitement that Mr. Pickett and Mrs. O'Neill welcome you to our Full-Day Early Learning Kindergarten Program at Parnall Public School. We are delighted that you have taken a few minutes to seek out our blog and take a look around. Be sure to check back in with us every few days as new posts are added throughout the week. We will do our best to post classroom happenings so you will know how your child is spending his/her day. To the right under 'DOWNLOADS', you will notice that there is a link to our September classroom calendar. It, too, will be updated regularly as our classroom schedule begins to take shape throughout the month. Be on the lookout for a Kindergarten Information brochure which will be coming home in your child's backpack this week. It contains lots of information regarding our program, our schedule and items your child will need to bring with him/her to school.

If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact Mr. Pickett or Mrs. O'Neill either before or after school. If needed, we can schedule an appointment with you to discuss any concerns you might have.

Again, WELCOME! We are glad you're here!

In the event of rain, the ceremony will be moved into the gymnasium. We hope to see you there.
WATERWORKS WEDNESDAY IS ON!

Tomorrow (Wednesday, June 24th) is Waterworks Wednesday for K-1. Come to school dressed in clothing that you do not mind getting wet. May we suggest a t-shirt, bathing trunks and flipflops or Crocs. Various water activities will be set up out in the kindergarten playground area for children in K-1 to enjoy. Be sure to pack a towel and a fresh change of dry clothing to dress in to following the water fun. Students are encouraged to bring squirt bottles, clean sponges and water wands. PLEASE... NO WATER GUNS or SUPER SOAKERS. As always, please label items from home with your child's name to ensure that the toys are returned to their rightful owners. Many thanks.

Calling all Dads! You are cordially invited to attend a pancake breakfast with your child tomorrow morning (Wednesday, June 17th) from 8:00 AM to 8:45 AM in our classroom. Come on into the school building through the main doors at the front. Then, follow your nose. We will be serving fresh, hot pancakes, syrup, bananas, hot coffee and juice for the kids. We certainly hope that you are planning to attend. Oh, and bring a hungry appetite, too! See you there.

Waterworks Wednesday is Postponed

The soggy weather this morning necessitated that our walking fieldtrip to the Fire Station be rescheduled for tomorrow, June 10th. We will depart the school at the same time (10:00AM). Parent volunteers are encouraged to arrive at the school at 9:45AM to meet their travelling groups. Our tour at the Fire Station is to begin at 10:30AM. As a result,  Waterworks Wednesday will be rescheduled for another day prior to the end of the month. Check back for rescheduling information.

Sunday 7 June 2015

Fire Station Walking Field Trip

This Tuesday, June 9th, K-1 students, teachers and parent volunteers will be walking over to the Linwell Road Fire Station for a brief tour and some fire safety tips. Parent volunteers are encouraged to arrive at the school no later than 9:45 AM. We plan on departing from Parnall around 10:00 AM. It should take about 20-25 minutes to get there. All parents are reminded of the importance of applying sunscreen to your child prior to sending him/her to school that morning. As well, each child is encouraged to wear a hat as a means of sun and heat protection. Our expected E.T.A. back at Parnall should be around 11:40 ish that morning barring any unforeseen emergencies.
WATERWORKS WEDNESDAY

Get ready! Get set! This Wednesday, you might get a little bit wet! Waterworks Wednesday is coming to the Parnall F.D.K. Program. For students who wish to participate, there will be some 'soggy centres' awaiting them on Wednesday morning, June 10th. Each kindergarten classroom will get an opportunity to spend 30 minutes with their classroom peers engaging in water-based activities out on the kindergarten playground. Children are asked to arrive at  school in clothing that they do not mind getting wet. We suggest a t-shirt, a pair of light shorts and flip-flops or Crocs. Wet sponges, buckets, water tables and squirt bottles will be available to play with and enjoy. At the end of our designated time slot, children will be escorted back into the building where they will change out of their wet clothing and into dry clothes. So, please send along a towel for your child to dry off, a dry outfit of clothes for him/her to change in to and a plastic bag to hold all of the wet articles of clothing before packing them into backpacks. As always, label everything well with you child's name.
Please note that if these activities DO NOT sound appealing to either you or your child, s/he can opt out and spend that time playing indoors. Participation IS NOT a requirement. In the event that the temperatures are too chilly for water play, we will postpone the event to a warmer day closer to the end of the month. We would appreciate families NOT sending water guns or 'super-soakers' to school with their children. Thanks for your consideration in this matter.
We're looking forward to a day 'dripping with fun.'

Wednesday 27 May 2015

Tomorrow, May 28th, promises to be a delightful day as all of our kinder friends are going on a Teddy Bear Picnic. Children are encouraged to bring a sack lunch with them in non-disposable containers. We don't want to have to bother with garbage on this special day. Other items to pack will be a hat, a towel to sit upon, sunscreen and some sunglasses. Last but not least, don't forget to bring your teddy bear! Mrs. O'Neill and I will lead the children on an adventure to the back of our playground lot where we will set up our eating area under the large willow trees. After the children have eaten their lunches, we will pack up our gear and head to the large playground where the children will have an opportunity to enjoy playing on the Grade One equipment for a few minutes.

Thank you in advance for helping us make this day a wonderful kindergarten memory.

If you go down in the woods today, you better go in disguise. If you go down in the woods today, be ready for a surprise...

RANKIN RUN, a Tremendous Success

On Saturday, May 23rd, over 12,000 people turned out to run in the 10th Annual Rankin Run for the Cure for Cancer. Over $900,000.00 dollars were raised as a result of the contributions made throughout the peninsula. Parnall School was very well represented by 140 team members who raised nearly $3000.00 of the above mentioned total. Many thanks to all of the families and contributors from our school. As a fun way of celebrating our school's accomplishments, Mrs. Penner, Miss Fowler, and several very brave intermediate students volunteered to be targets in a pie throwing contest. Mr. Scott sat in the 'wet seat' as students hurled beanbags at a target which led to buckets of water pouring over his head. What a fun way to celebrate a fabulous achievement.
Parnall family, you are AMAZING!

In support of our team, students and faculty are encouraged to wear orange on Friday, May 22nd. Let's make it a fabulous day.

OUR DONATION STATION is OPEN FOR BUSINESS

Have you noticed our Donation Station located in our playground area next to the entry door? As the warmer weather is now upon us, we are needing to add some fresh materials to our outdoor play equipment collection. The children are LOVING being outside and we want to keep them challenged and busy. If you have any outdoor play materials that are gently used which you would not mind donating to our stash, we would be most appreciative. You will notice some suggestions written on the signs which are located on the table. As well, donations of potting soil, gardening tools and large plastic potting containers are needed as we would like to engage the children in some gardening and planting activities to beautify our play space while offering them an opportunity to learn about gardening and plant care.

Thank you so much for thinking of us as you do your spring cleaning.

Rankin Run, May 23rd

Be sure to save the date and consider joining the Parnall School/Rankin Run Team on May 23rd at the Grantham Lions Club (off of Niagara Street) as folks from all across the Niagara Region come together to raise money to fund our local hospitals and care organizations in helping to fight cancer. Most of us have been touched in some way by this terrible disease. The Rankin Run provides us all with an opportunity to come together and celebrate the victories we are seeing in cancer research and treatment. The day offers a 1KM and a 5KM walk/run. Food, fellowship and fun add to a great family/community experience which you'll not soon forget.

Our Parnall Kick-Off Assembly will be on Thursday, April 30th at 1:35PM in the Parnall gymnasium. At that time, students will learn about how they can take an active part in raising money which will be used locally to aid those living with cancer. Information regarding sponsorship and t-shirt sales will be explained at the assembly and forms will be sent home with children who express an interest in wanting to get involved.

We hope that you and your family will consider being a part of our Parnall Team. Don't forget to wear orange to show your support.

Go TEAM PARNALL!!!
Feasting at Sobeys

On Friday, April 24th, students and parent volunteers had an opportunity to tour Sobeys Grocery Store at the Grantham Plaza on Scott Street. We were treated to a variety of delicious foods which included fresh bananas, coconut, dried mango, cheese, sliced ham, cheese cake, mini cupcakes and pizza. We had an opportunity to learn many new things including...

- what parts of the world some fresh fruits and vegetables are grown
- why buy organic
- animals who produce milk for cheese production
- how to make a beautiful flower out of cake icing

We even got to touch a real lobster. There were so many exciting adventures packed into our 75 minutes at Sobeys. At the end of our trip, each child was given a Sobeys grocery bag which contained a piece of fruit and a beverage, along with coupons and flyers which can be redeemed at the store.

Many thanks to all of the parent volunteers who assisted on our trip. Your contribution made our day a safe and happy experience for everyone.

Tux and Tutus Tuesday
in Kindergarten

The Kindergarten team has designated Tuesday, April 21st as a Kindergarten Spirit Day called 'Tux and Tutus' Tuesday.

Although we are not asking the children to wear tuxes and tutus, we would ask that they wear their best dressy outfit to school that morning.

We are requesting that each child bring a toonie by Thursday, April 23rd to help offset the costs of a craft which we will be doing on that special day.

Thanks so much for supporting our special Spirit Day!

Wednesday 15 April 2015

HAT DAY IS THIS FRIDAY!

Hat Day is this Friday. Show your school spirit and wear your favourite hat to school.
FREEZIE FRIDAYS!

Beginning Friday, April 17th, freezies will be sold at the beginning of second break for 25 cents each.
We Are Planning a Trip to Sobeys

On Friday, April 24th, K-1 will be going on a field trip to Sobeys Grocery Store. The trip includes a tour of the different departments and information about eating, pricing, safety, Canadian cheeses, lobster, cake decorating, pizza, organic foods and more! The trip connects to our kindergarten health curriculum. Throughout the year, our students have been learning about the benefits of eating healthy foods and identifying 'everyday foods' (healthy foods) and 'sometimes foods' (special treats).

Pizza orders will be taken as usual that morning, just as is done each Friday morning. We are scheduled to leave the school by bus at approximately 11:30. Our grocery store tour will begin at 11:45. We will depart Sobeys at 1:30 and return to the school where we will then have our lunch.

We ask that you ensure your child come to school that morningwith a substantial snack which they will be encouraged to eat prior to departing for the store. Although your child will be offered snacks at Sobeys, s/he will not be having lunch until around 2:00 in the afternoon.

The cost of field trip is $4.00 per child. This money is intended to cover the cost of transportation only. The actual tour of Sobeys is free.

If you are interested in volunteering for this event, please indicate your interest on the note which is being sent home with your child today in his/her Zippy Bag. Volunteers will be given a small group of children to supervise and must come on the bus. Sorry, but we cannot accept smaller siblings on this trip.

Please return the permission form to the school no later than Monday, April 20th. Parents selected to volunteer will be notified by phone by Mr. Pickett.

A Little Bit of Easter
to Brighten the Room

Upon entering the classroom, it won't take long to notice that there are hints of Easter all around. Here are just a few examples of what you might see on any given day this week.

Two students created Easter nests using play dough and wooden Easter eggs.

Christmas isn't the only time that indoor trees can be decorated. Several of our students hung eggs and Easter ornaments all over our Easter Tree. It quickly became a popular centre in the classroom.
All Decked out for Easter

Thanks to the talents of our Kindergarten artists, our classroom door is taking on a very festive look these days. Easter eggs in a variety of springtime colours brighten our hallway and welcome the much awaited season of spring.
