I Spy Scary Things
(Play this counting game with a family member.)

How many ghosts do you spy?

How many bats do you spy?

Do you spy a calculator?

How many spiders do you spy?

What else do you spy?

* This morning, we awoke to a glorious, sunny day. Yes, the temperature is a bit nippy, but the sky is a beautiful shade of blue and sitting in the middle of it all is a huge ball of light and energy--THE SUN! This week, we are going to learn a little about the sun and why it is so important. To get us started, consider taking a walk with a parent or an older sibling sometime this morning or afternoon. When you are outside and the sunshine is streaming down on you, how does it feel against your body? When it is sunny outside, how does that affect your mood? Are you more likely to feel happy or sad? Talk with an adult about things that you like to do on a sunny day. Some suggestions might be--have a picnic, help a parent wash the car, kick a soccer ball back and forth to each other, or look for interesting insects in your garden or backyard lawn.

* Can you think of songs that tell about the sun?  Here’s one that you might know…

You Are My Sunshine
You are my sunshine,
My only sunshine.
You make me happy
When skies are gray.
You’ll never know dear
How much I love you.
Please don’t take my sunshine away.

The other night, dear
As I lay sleeping,
I dream’t I held you in my arms.
And now that you’re here
My dreams are waking
And I will keep you from all harm.

I’ll always love you
And make you happy.
I’ll pick you up when you’ve fallen down.
You turn the sky blue
When it is raining.
You’ll always keep the sunshine around.

You can listen and sing along using this link:

Self-Regulation and Well-Being

* Here is a slide presentation created and narrated by our own Mrs. MacDonald about the Zones of Regulation, Which Zone Am I In?. Click on the link below and, under the ‘VIEW’ drop down menu, click on ‘Present’ at the very top. The slide show will load automatically onto your computer. To advance the slides, click on the ‘enter’ button on your computer keyboard. Which zone are you in?

* How can we be safe in the sun? Watch George, the Sun Safe Superstar!

Demonstrates Literacy and Mathematics Behaviours

* There are several things that George shared about how to be safe when we are outside in the sunshine. Rewatch the video read-aloud displayed above if needed. Make a book about Sun Safety. Write about some of the things that you learned which will help you stay safe when you are outside in the sun. You may want to use this sentence frame to help you get started…

I   can   _______   in   the   sun.
(I can wear a hat in the sun.  I can wear sunglasses in the sun.  I can wear sunscreen in the sun. Etc…)

* William tracked the weather for seven days. He recorded the information on a table. See below.

  • Can you show William’s information in a different way? (e.g., use 5 Frames, tally marks or a graph)
  • What did you learn from William’s information?
    • How many rainy days were there in the week?
    • How many sunny days were there in the week?
    • How many cloudy days were there in the week?
    • Which kind of weather was there the MOST of in the week?
    • Which kind of weather was there the LEAST of in the week?
    • How many MORE sunny days were there than cloudy days in the week?
    • How do you know?

Problem Solving and Innovation

* The SUN is important because it gives us energy. Listen to the following video read-aloud, Energy From the Sun.

What did you learn about the sun’s energy?  Talk about it with a parent. Draw a picture of one way in which the sun’s energy helps us. Write labels to name two things in your picture.

* PROBLEM SOLVING TASK:
Go outside in your backyard and look around. What do you see that NEEDS the sun’s energy to live?

Wednesday Blog Post
Activities for May 6-May 13

Belonging and Contributing
  • Make a poster for Mom. Title it...5 Things I Love About My Mom. Use pictures and words to complete your poster. Present it to your mom as a celebration of the many things that you love and cherish about her.

  • Help prepare a tasty snack that you and mom can enjoy together, perhaps outside on a sunny day. Spread a blanket under a tree in your yard. Some easy food options for you to prepare might be...cookies and milk, a sandwich, chips and a cold drink, or fruit and nuts. Spend time talking about some of the special things you have gotten to do together.

  • A Chain of Caring:  Who matters most to you in your life? I am certain that you can come up with a list of people whom you care about and who care about you. Take some coloured paper and cut it into strips about an inch or so wide. Write the name of each person on one of the strips, using letters that are large enough to read from a distance, about an inch or so tall. After making your ‘name strips,’ create a chain using those strips by fastening them together using a stapler or tape. You may need an adult to offer you a little assistance with this. Once your chain is completed, place it in a prominent place in your home where all can see it and ‘think about’ those who hold special places in your heart. Who knows?  Your parents and siblings may want to make a chain of their own. You could connect all the chains together and hang them in your living room or over your dining table. Spend time talking about why the people you added to your chain ‘matter to you.’

Who were the CHARACTERS in the story? What was the PROBLEM in the story? How did Hazel’s Mother solve the PROBLEM? Tell you mother why you believe she is amazing.

  • Enjoy the book Wacky Wednesday, by Dr. Seuss.  You can access it using this URL…  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b653k3-_wIM&t=99s  This is a wacky counting book. After listening to the book, create your own Wacky Wednesday picture. Create a picture with 10 wacky things in it. Show your picture to an adult and see if they can pick out all 10. Happy Wacky Wednesday, boys and girls.

Problem Solving and Innovation

  • Create an Ant Farm.  Have you been noticing any six legged uninvited guests in your home lately? I certainly have. This is the time of year when ants leave their nests and go in search of food and water. These industrious insects are incredibly interesting to watch and learn about. You can create your own Ant Farm quite easily with the help of an adult and a few things that you probably have around your house. Watch this short video for some ideas on how this is done.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8edRYbn65Oo
Collecting ants is rarely difficult this time of year. Put some honey or corn syrup on a piece of parchment paper and leave it on the floor in your kitchen where you suspect ants might be coming in. Place them into the container you have created after watching the YouTube video provided above. Make sure that your ants have food, water, and oxygen. Over the first few days, you will begin to see tunnels forming inside the clear container you use for your farm. Take pictures of your Ant Farm and send them to us so that we can post them on the blog. Have fun!

  • Sing The Ants Go Marching song and make up actions to each verse. Here are the lyrics to the song…

The ants go marching one by one.
Hoorah! Hoorah!
The ants go marching one by one.
Hoorah! Hoorah!
The ants go marching one by one.
The little one eats a juicy plum.
And they all go marching down to the ground.
To get out of the rain.
Yum, yum, yum!
The ants go marching two by two.
Hoorah! Hoorah!
The ants go marching two by two.
Hoorah! Hoorah!
The ants go marching two by two.
The little one drinks some apple juice.
And they all go marching down to the ground.
To get out of the rain.
Yum, yum, yum!
The ants go marching three by three.
Hoorah! Hoorah!
The ants go marching three by three.
Hoorah! Hoorah!
The ants go marching three by three.
The little one drinks a spot of tea.
And they all go marching down to the ground.
To get out of the rain.
Yum, yum, yum!
The ants go marching four by four.
Hoorah! Hoorah!
The ants go marching four by four.

The ants go marching five by five.
Hoorah! Hoorah!
The ants go marching five by five.
The little one eats a pumpkin pie.

The ants go marching six by six.
Hoorah! Hoorah!
The ants go marching six by six.
The little one eats potato chips.

The ants go marching eight by eight.

Hoorah! Hoorah!
The ants go marching eight by eight.
The little one eats a chocolate cake.

The ants go marching nine by nine.
Hoorah! Hoorah!
The ants go marching nine by nine.
The little one eats a sour lime.

To get out of the rain.
