Beauty in the Simplest of Things

At our Artist's Table this week, budding Van Goghs will find a simple vase of September sedum with paper and artist's pencils awaiting their keen eyes and talented hands. Enjoy, little ones!

An Autumnal Provocation Awaiting Your Child

What do you see?

After exploring the bin's contents, we will compose an 'I see...' anchor chart. This will help to reinforce the high frequency words 'I' and 'see' which are being introduced this week. Students will be encouraged to write their own 'I See...' books.

Cooler Temps, Label Clothing

As the temperatures are slowly creeping their way downward (big SIGH), students are arriving at school with more and more clothing to wear during outdoor play. This is a good thing. However, many items continue to arrive unlabelled. Please, please, PLEASE label every item of clothing with your child's name that is sent to school. It is impossible for Ms. Campbell and myself to keep track of the dozens of shoes, boots, coats, sweaters, jackets and other garments that arrive at school each morning unless proper labels are included.
Thanks so much for your helping your child and us to stay organized.
Bry-Anne's Pumpkin Patch Trip

On Wednesday, October 23, all ELP classes will be going to Bry-Anne's Pumpkin Patch. Permission forms will be sent home this week. The cost of the trip will be $11.50 per child. Adults will be admitted for free. Space on the buses will be limited, so some parents may need to drive themselves to and from the farm in their own vehicles. While there, each child will receive an apple as a snack and will get to pick out a small pumpkin to take home as a souvenir of their day. Keep an eye out for permission forms in your child's Zippy Bag.
ELP to Host Thanksgiving Meal

On Thursday, October 10, the ELP team will be hosting a Thanksgiving meal at lunchtime for all of the Kindergarten students. Each ELP classroom will provide one dish for the meal. The menu will consist of...
-a roasted chicken leg
-potatoes
-glazed carrots
-cooked apples with cinnamon

More information will be coming your way later this week regarding the cost and items you might wish to contribute. Keep an eye out for further details.
A Castle Emerges

Over the past week, we have been quite busy transforming our Dramatic Play Centre into a castle. The process has been and continues to be a slow one, but we hope to have a completed castle by the end of this next week. We began by clearing away all of our beautiful, new 'kitchen' furniture and stacking it in a corner of the classroom. Next, the wall was cleared of student work and documentation.

Students busily cut and shaded pieces of light construction paper to give the impression of stones. Black paper was used as a base to suggest aging mortar. Many students contributed their painting skills by assisting Ms. Campbell outside in painting large cardboard boxes to be used within the space to suggest stone walls.

Many thanks to parents who have contributed masks, crowns and simple costume pieces for our 'castle' project. These items will certainly help the children get into the spirit of the Middle Ages and life at court. We are still in need of some armour to outfit our knights. Swords are being discouraged as our space is extremely limited and we need to maintain as safe an environment as possible.

Check back in often to monitor our progress.

Castles, Knights and Princesses

We are nearing the end of our first month in school and everyone is settling in nicely. Our classroom is a busy place with 32 students and two adults. There are lots of exciting things to do and many learning experiences in which to indulge.

Toward the middle of last week, the question was posed...”What would you like to see our Dramatic Play Centre become? This sparked quite a buzz of excitement as ideas were shared by many. A list of possibilities was written on chart paper with well over 20 ideas contributed to it. It was then left over night for the children to ponder. On Thursday afternoon, the list was revisited and read several times with everyone sitting at the learning carpet. Afterwards, each child was given a sticker so that s/he might cast a vote for her/his favourite idea. The results are in! With over a quarter of the total votes cast, the boys and girls chose to transform the Dramatic Play Centre into a castle. The excitement level was palpable. With the decision now made, everyone was asked to consider what they knew about a castle and what would be needed to create one in our classroom. Again, another list was composed with many great ideas. As classroom space is limited, some design suggestions might need to be drawn onto the backdrop, rather than be built out of cardboard and blocks. There was quite an interest in ‘clothing’ for princesses and knights. If any families have costumes in their dress-up boxes that they would not mind donating to the cause, that would be greatly appreciated. Students have been asked to not bring in swords of any kind for obvious reasons. Label costume items with your child’s name and we will do our best to see that these items are shared fairly and treated with respect. Monday’s work is cut out for us. We will be developing a plan before our ‘castle building project’ begins. Check in often to monitor our progress.

Along with castles, knights and princesses, we are spending lots of time reading great books and talking about story elements in fictional text. The children are learning about the roles of the author and illustrator in the writing of children’s literature. As well, students are learning how to identify characters in a story and how the story revolves around them. Our next story element focus will be on the setting of a story. We will learn that the reader uses pictures from the text, clues from the author and our own schema to determine the setting(s) in a book. Please pay attention to these elements in the stories that you read to your child at home. Question him/her about them and praise their understanding.

The letters S, A, T, P, I, and N will be our alphabet focus for the next several days. Opportunities for sorting, letter identification, sound correlation and upper/lowercase matching will be made available throughout the room for children to investigate as they choose. Time spent at home discussing these letters and the sounds that they make would be extremely helpful and help to tie into the learning that is occurring in the classroom.

Counting is the mathematical focus for the month. We have learned what counting is and why it is important. Throughout our day, Ms. Campbell and I capitalize on opportunities for counting with the children. This, too, can be a focus for parents to support and practice at home. Reading counting books and engaging in authentic counting experiences throughout the home makes the learning real and purposeful.

Friday is Pizza Day!

Every Friday beginning September 20, Parnall School will be offering pizza to students as a lunch option. Students wanting to order pizza should bring $1.00 per slice to school with them in the morning. Following morning announcements, students will place their orders for lunch with myself and Ms. Campbell. Students may select from either plain cheese pizza or pepperoni and cheese pizza. The pizza will be delivered to the classroom at the beginning of second nutrition break (12:55 PM). Milk will be provided to students who have prepaid for a milk card. If you wish for your child to have additional food items for lunch, simply pack them in their snack bag along with their morning snack items and drink. This new routine will be a weekly event in our school each Friday. Enjoy!

Cooler Temperatures Outside

As the temperatures have taken a bit of a dive over the last 24 hours, please be sure and send your child to school with seasonally appropriate outdoor clothing. Today, several children complained of being cold and not having enough clothing to keep them warm outside. Might we suggest packing light gloves and a hat for your child as many little fingers got quite chilled playing on the outdoor equipment. As always, label everything with your child's name as some garments are already being unclaimed and left behind. Labelled items have a much better chance of being returned successfully to their owners.
Barbecue Tomorrow Night

We hope that you will be joining us tomorrow evening (Tuesday, September 17th) from 5PM-7PM for the 'Meet the Teacher Barbecue.' Those families who have pre-ordered food can eat between 5-6PM. Teachers will be available in their classrooms to receive families after 6PM. We hope you will drop by and see what we have been up to over the first two weeks of school.
