Hallowe'en Costume Parade
in Kindergarten

Parents and relatives are invited to our Parnall School Kindergarten Hallowe'en Costume Parade. It will be held tomorrow morning just after announcements (9:00 AM ish). The parade will begin in the gymnasium where parents are asked to assemble. The children will parade all around the gym and then they will march throughout the school, visiting each classroom along the way.

Please pack your child a change of play clothes in his/her backpack. Following the parade, the children will change out of their costumes and into regular school clothing. Include a plastic bag for your child's costume to be placed into. We will do our best to make sure that costumes are packed safely in each of their backpacks so that they can be worn tomorrow night.

Have a safe and happy Hallowe'en
Unpredictable Weather /
Extra Clothing Needed

Over the next several weeks, the weather promises to be unpredictable at best. Temperatures will fluctuate and humidity levels will be high. Some of the children in the classroom have been complaining that they are cold and need warmer clothes to wear when playing outside. Please send your child to school with layerable clothing so that they will be warm and comfortable over these mid-autumn days. We also recommend that children have a hat, scarf and mittens each day, just in case they need them. And, as always, LABEL EVERYTHING! Thank you.

Party Snacks

Last Friday, October 19th, a special note was sent home in your child's Mr. Zip Bag detailing a schedule for party snacks and food choices for the remaining months of the school year. Historically, parents have sent in various snacks and foods for special days such as Hallowe'en, Christmas, Valentine's Day, Easter and the End of the Year Party. Much of the time, the amount of food sent in has been overwhelming. Sadly, the children often have a few bites and the rest ends up in the garbage can. This year, we have tried to solve that problem by assigning each family with one of those celebrations mentioned above. We have indicated a treat that you might want to send in, as well. We want to make this a shared experience for our K-1 families and we do not want to overburden anyone. If your assigned snack/date are a concern, please get in touch with us. If you are satisfied with what we have proposed, then there is no need to reply.

Thank you for considering this 'new approach' to holiday party foods/treats. We appreciate the contributions you make to these celebrations. The children enjoy them and so do we. We simply want to eliminate waste and avoid 'over-sugaring' the children as much as we can.

Thank you.

2) Send money to school with your child on Friday morning in his/her Mr. Zip Bag. Clearly label the money with your child's name and the type of pizza desired. Children may have either plain cheese pizza or cheese and pepperoni.

Calling All Headphones

On Monday, September 17th, the students in K-1 will participate in their first computer class of the school year. Each child will require a pair of his/her own headphones to use for this activity. The school no longer provides these for students. If you have already sent in a pair of headphones for your child, thank you. If not, please purchase a pair of inexpensive headphones and write your child's name on them. Place them in a large Ziploc bag labeled with your child's name and send them to school in his/her backpack. We will keep them throughout the year and return them to you in late June of next year.  Many thanks.

EFN Donations

Hey Pirates, it's Wacky Week at Parnall School! Don't forget that tomorrow is Crazy Hair Day. All of this 'wackiness' is in support of the Education Foundation of Niagara--The EFN--who help children with their everyday needs. EFN provides funding for students who need glasses and needed medical subsidies. If possible, contribute a little something to this worthy cause. All amounts, large and small, will be greatly appreciated. Many thanks.

BUGS, BUGS, BUGS!

Our interest in butterfly larvae has sparked in inquiry into insects. We've been very busy...

Look Who Has Arrived!

Last Wednesday, 12 little orphans arrived at our classroom in a cardboard box. Take a look...

They are painted lady larvae. We have been fascinated in watching them develop. They have grown considerably in the last six days. To date, they have more than tripled their size. We are anxiously awaiting them to pupate.

Earth Day is Sunday, April 22nd

What can you and your family do to help take care of our planet? Take some time this week to talk with your child about simple things that can be done to REUSE, RENEW, REPURPOSE, RECYCLE, conserve and care for our planet.

This week, we will be discussing water conservation, sorting recyclable items and repurposing objects and containers in the home. We will also get outside, weather permitting, and tidy up our school yard. A favourite book that I like to share, Pattie Pitter, She Hates Litter! will be read to encourage students to dispose of their litter responsibly.

Prepare to Hibernate

On Friday, February 9th we will be hibernating in our classroom. We are currently learning about hibernation as part of our winter science investigation. We are encouraging you to send your child to school that morning in his/her pajamas and bathrobe. You may also want to pack slippers in his/her backpack, too. Label all clothing items, please. As the temperatures are bitterly cold outside, you may wish to layer your child for added warmth. Children may also bring their favourite stuffed animal to enjoy throughout the day. As an added part of the day, we would ask that your child bring a small stuffed animal to leave in our ‘hibernation den’ throughout the rest of the winter season. On the first day of spring, these animals will ‘wake up’ and have a celebration before coming back home with your child. Throughout the day we will also be enjoying some hibernation activities and playing some special games. A healthy hibernation treat will be served later in the day.

Thank you in advance for participating and making our Hibernation Day a success.

PINK SHIRT DAY

Home Reading Program to BEGIN with JK's

JK students will be bringing home a 'Reading Bag' this week which will include a short book, a reading log and an information sheet for parents/guardians which will offer suggestions concerning the program. The purpose behind this program is to offer you and your child an opportunity each day to interact with a book, talk about the reading process and have fun. Spend as little as 5-10 minutes a day and don't feel guilty if you miss a day here and there. This is NOT intended to be a burden for anyone. Return the bag every Friday morning with your child's Mr. Zip Bag and expect a new book in your child's bag that afternoon which will carry them through until the following Friday. If you have questions or concerns, please send us a note or call the school and we will be glad to assist you.

Thank you for making this a priority in your child's reading journey.

Welcome back!
